“Under the Influence,” is an exhibition which celebrates the influence and work of Frank P. “Tico” Herrera. Tico, a founding member of Photoworks, who taught advanced photography and printing at Glen Echo for more than 45 years, exerted a profound influence on the many photography students and practitioners who studied with him over the course of his tenure. His mastery of portrait and landscape genres and his unflagging humor will be featured along with the work of his former students.

Tico’s document of Robert Mapplethorpe’s images projected on the Corcoran Art Museum facade when the Mapplethorpe exhibition was cancelled in the summer of 1989  is among his most indelible images. He was also a recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship grant to document the proliferation of crosses installed by the fervent Bernard Coffindaffer, which resulted in a cover story for The Washington Post Magazine.
