April 5th - May 11th 2025
Opening Reception: Saturday, April 5th, 2025 at Photoworks, 4-6pm

Photoworks is pleased to announce the opening of "Ready For It"

The "Ready For It" exhibit features work from the students of four local high schools: Holton-Arms School, Poolesville High School, The Siena School, and Walter Johnson High School. The collection of photographs represents the students' interpretation of the theme and their individual perspectives.

The Holton-Arms School

The Photography program at The Holton-Arms School offers two levels of instruction.

Beginning Photography focuses on black-and-white film and printing. Students learn the fundamentals of a manual camera, darkroom techniques, and how to develop film.

After completing the beginning course, students can advance to the Major Photography course, which meets as frequently as academic classes. In this course, students refine their black-and-white printing skills to a high level and learn to work with strobe lighting. They also gain experience using DSLRs and editing their work in Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom.

This collection of photographs represents the students' interpretation of the theme "Ready For It." All work was done by Photography Majors.

Poolesville High School

Poolesville High School students in AP Photography are in the final year of completing their advanced certification in visual arts - Photography.  One of our students has gone beyond this and is completing an independent study during her senior year, to focus on creating her sports photography business.  Images were selected to fit the exhibition theme and student's individual interpretation and perspective.

The Siena School

The photographs from The Siena School’s students are C-Type prints showing a broad spectrum of students’ photographic skills and interests. All selected students are in high school and have developed advanced skills through their multi-year commitment to photography.

With campuses in Silver Spring, MD, and Oakton, VA, The Siena School serves bright, college-bound students with dyslexia and other language-based learning differences in elementary, middle, and high school grades.

Walter Johnson High School

The Walter Johnson High School photography program educates over 200 students in four levels of study.  Coursework incorporates traditional black and white darkroom and current digital photographic techniques.  The joint faculty of Kim Venesky and Dan Kempner emphasizes the fundamentals and history of photography and encourages experimentation with a wide variety of techniques and equipment. The ten images included in “Ready for It” were made by the nine AP2D Photography students at WJ in addition to one submission that was selected by the AP students as a contest winner.
